Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties

A psychiatrist is a physician who is board certified / eligible in general psychiatrist who has a full unrestricted license to practice medicine. Physicians must obtain or maintain their certifications in psychiatry. All physicians must be able to informally interpret diagnostic tests in the course of clinical practice; an "official interpretation" refers to the interpretation of record. A psychiatrist participates in goal-setting and treatment service planning discussions; serves on or chairs task groups or administrative committees of the service or Medical Center at the direction or approval of the Chief, Mental Health Service or designee. A psychiatrist participates in professional peer review of his/her own work and that of other staff; maintains and upgrades professional knowledge and skills by involvement in appropriate continuing education activities, and participates in at least one of the following at the direction or approval of the Chief, Mental Health Service or designee: Conducts assessments and formulates diagnoses; and develops treatment plans for patients with substance use and/or other psychiatric disorders, using an interdisciplinary team approach. Manages psychiatric medication for patients; evaluates the general medical suitability of clinic patients for withdrawal management, detoxification and/or psychiatric hospitalization; and assesses and intervenes with patients presenting in crisis. Prescribes medications for the treatment of substance use disorders, including buprenorphine, as well as medications for other psychiatric disorders. Will serve as the champion for any substance use disorder/opioid use disorder (SUD/OUD) that requires SUD/OUD expertise as a consultant for CBOC locations, in committees or process improvement projects. Collaboration, coordination, and cooperation with colleagues within and across disciplines are essential skills (i.e. Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) team). Requirements

U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
