This individual will be responsible for the end-to-end mechanical integration of the battery system, including structural design, electrical packaging and routing support, thermal management, and safety features such as thermal propagation mitigation.</p> <h2>About the Role</h2> <p>This is a critical role with a direct impact on robot performance, reliability, safety, manufacturability, and total lifecycle cost. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in battery pack integration, packaging, and mounting with broad mechanical engineering experience and a proven ability to execute complex, cross-functional hardware programs from concept through production.</p> <h2><strong>You're excited about this opportunity because...</strong></h2> <h3><strong>Battery System Mechanical Integration</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Own the mechanical integration of the battery system throughout the product lifecycle, from concept through production.</li> <li>Design robust battery mounting structures, enclosures, retention features, and interfaces for a mobile robotic platform.</li> <li>Develop packaging solutions that balance structural performance, serviceability, manufacturability, weight, and cost.</li> <li>Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, and systems engineers to ensure seamless battery integration into the overall robot architecture.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Mechanical Design &amp; Product Development</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Design and release mechanical components and assemblies using CAD and engineering best practices.</li> <li>Perform tolerance analysis, stack-up studies, and interface definition for battery-related hardware.</li> <li>Support prototype builds, design reviews, testing, root cause investigations, and engineering change implementation.</li> <li>Drive designs through validation and into production while maintaining high quality and reliability.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Thermal &amp; Environmental Performance</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Develop mechanical solutions that support battery thermal performance, including cooling airflow, heat transfer, insulation, and environmental protection.</li> <li>Collaborate with battery and electrical engineers to validate thermal performance under expected operating conditions.</li> <li>Design for environmental durability including water ingress, dust, vibration, shock, corrosion, and impact resistance.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Safety &amp; Reliability</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Design mechanical features that improve battery safety, including crash protection, containment, venting, isolation, and thermal propagation mitigation.</li> <li>Participate in DFMEA, design reviews, and failure investigations to improve overall system robustness.</li> <li>Define and execute validation testing for structural integrity, vibration, drop, environmental exposure, and abuse scenarios.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Cross-Functional Collaboration</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Partner closely with Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Firmware, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Reliability teams throughout product development.</li> <li>Support supplier selection, component qualification, and manufacturing readiness.</li> <li>Drive engineering tradeoff decisions balancing performance, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.</li> <li>Analyze field failures, identify root causes, and implement robust corrective actions to improve product reliability.</li> </ul> <h2><strong>We're excited about you because...</strong></h2> <ul> <li>BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.</li> <li>7+ years of experience developing complex mechanical systems from concept through production.</li> <li>Demonstrated experience integrating lithium-ion battery systems into production products.</li> <li>Strong mechanical design experience, including:</li> <ul> <li>Battery packaging and mechanical integration</li> <li>Structural design and mounting systems</li> <li>Thermal management and cooling strategies</li> <li>Environmental sealing and durability</li> <li>Serviceability, manufacturability, and assembly design</li> </ul> <li>Experience designing for dynamic loading environments including vibration, shock, and impact.</li> <li>Experience performing tolerance analysis, root cause investigations, and design validation.</li> <li>Proficiency with SolidWorks, Siemens NX, or equivalent 3D CAD software.</li> <li>Experience collaborating across electrical, firmware, manufacturing, and systems engineering disciplines.</li> <li>Experience supporting products through prototype, validation, and production.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>Preferred Qualifications</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Experience developing robotic, automotive, electric vehicle, aerospace, or other mobile electromechanical systems.</li> <li>Experience integrating high-voltage or lithium-ion battery systems into production hardware.</li> <li>Experience with DFMEA, reliability engineering, and structured failure analysis.</li> <li>Familiarity with thermal and structural simulation tools (ANSYS, Simcenter, Abaqus, or equivalent).</li> <li>Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and supplier development.</li> <li>Familiarity with battery safety concepts including thermal propagation mitigation, venting, and abuse testing.</li> <li>Experience supporting regulatory compliance and product certification (UL, IEC, UN38.3, or similar).</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p style="font-weight: 500;">Notice to Applicants for Jobs Located in NYC or Remote Jobs Associated With Office in NYC Only</p> <p>We use Covey as part of our hiring and/or promotional process for jobs in NYC and certain features may qualify it as an AEDT in NYC.
